In the space of just five decades the creation and evolution of the internet has completely transformed the way we live. There are not many inventions that we get to see in our lifetime that have such a profound impact on the way we work and communicate but when four leading U.S universities hooked up their computers to create the world’s first network, little did anyone know what it would all lead to in such a relatively short space of time.
From that inauspicious start, where the network crashed after only transmitting two single letters of text, there are now close to 300 billion emails popping up in millions of inboxes each and every day, let alone the amount of surfing and transactions that have become part of our work and leisure activities.
There is little sign of this stellar growth in internet usage slowing up and technology is constantly evolving at a brisk pace to be able to cope with the demands placed on the World Wide Web in every corner of the globe on a daily basis.
When you consider that the speed of data transfer in 1984 was measured in kilobytes and the standard dial-up speed was just 56K per second and the average speed today is 7.6MB, an incredible 136 times faster than it was then, you can only guess what speeds will be needed and achieved in the future.
The evolution of the internet is a fascinating story and here is a look at some of the feats achieved and landmark events during its relatively brief existence.

204 million emails per minute… wow that’s insane! It’s amazing how one thing could revolutionize the way the world interacts.
It is indeed really amazing how internet has evolved in such a very short period of time. As a parent, I am very careful with how internet is used in the house especially now that my son knows already how to navigate over the net. I always told him to be more responsible since I cannot protect him at all times when he is using the net.
